Today on the Hill: Senators to Clinch USMCA
January 16, 2020Senators are set to close out the week with a historic day of legislative business. First, the Senate is expected to clear implementing legislation for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) after several committees approved President Donald Trump’s signature trade pact on a bipartisan basis this week. President Trump stated Wednesday that he plans to sign the deal next week.
Following the transmission of the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump from the House to the Senate yesterday, the upper chamber will now begin the trial process in earnest. After the vote on USMCA, Senators officially receive the impeachment managers who will present the articles and will be sworn in as jurors by Chief Justice John Roberts. The impeachment trial is set to get underway next Tuesday.
On the House floor today, lawmakers will consider a Congressional Review Act resolution that would overturn a Department of Education Rule relating to “Borrower Defense Institutional Accountability.” The Trump administration strongly pushed back against the resolution in a veto threat earlier this week, arguing that it would “undermine the Administration’s efforts to protect students and taxpayers.” The measure is expected to pass on party lines later this morning.
